Meeting client standards
For the XML Summer School, compliance with Web standards was a must. Organisers, tutors and students alike are devotees of open standards: more importantly, the event is sponsored by the World Wide Web Consortium - creators of global Web standards.
Within the constraints of standards such as CSS and XHTML, Carino developed a Web site that nevertheless fulfilled the requirement to be "funky and appeal to a youthful audience".
Key challenges that were met included:
- Using font-replacement scripts removed the need to create headings as graphics where the design dictated non-standard fonts .
- A complex block diagram illustrating the curriculum was styled entirely in cascading style sheets
- Templates allowed the client to maintain the site without jeopardising standards compliance
